OUFC has a highly successfully beginners foil training programme (the recommended weapon for beginner fencers). Our training programme is aimed at generating competent fencers who would then be able to further their practice in foil at a competitive level, or adjust to the other weapons of the sport.
In Trinity term the programme culminates in a Novices Varsity match with historic rivals Cambridge University (CUFC). Selected fencers from the year’s foil training will be asked to represent OUFC, meaning that fencers new to the sport can represent the university at some level after less than a year of training. With further training, fencers formerly on this programme have gone on to participate in the Varsity match proper.
Classes are led by OUFC coaches Chris Jones, Maddi Pearce and Kati Cohn- Gordon (all BFA/BAF qualified).
We also offer beginner/improver epee classes in conjunction with the Oxford University Modern Pentathlon Association. These are also open to OUFC beginners with little or no fencing experience. After a few weeks in the classes, fencers are also encouraged to attend the epee sessions on a Friday (6.00-8.00pm) run by OUMPA.
Classes are led by Chris Jones (BFA/BAF qualified).
The club does not currently offer sabre beginner classes, though fencers with some experience can attend the intermediate sabre group led by club coach Tomek. For more information, contact intermediates' secretary.
The full training timetable can be found on this page.
To receive more up-to-date information, contact beginners' secretary to be added to our beginners mailing list.
OUFC admits new beginners (with no experience) to these classes in only the first three weeks of term: after week three, potential beginners will unfortunately have to wait until Hilary for a new intake of students. Beginners with some fencing experience may still be permitted to join later in Michaelmas or Hilary term, but should contact beginners' secretary for more information.
OUFC members can contact beginners' secretary for more information.
Joe Pearce has kindly provided some fencing tips for the beginner.
